The goal of the project was to create awareness for statistics surrounding assault and rape of Native American women as well as advocate for a women’s sovereignty over her own body. The work was inspired by the women in my own family who have faced these obstacles as well a book Four Souls by Louise Erdrich. The work consists of a poster, bumper sticker, and additional sticker. The color palette is inspired by Ojibwa art and a beaded texture is included to convey a sense of native adornment. In the poster, the battered woman who is contrasted by the silhouettes is utilized as an icon for the many faceless women who are victims of this injustice. In the bumper sticker and poster, the same bolded san serif type is used to accentuate the statistical data points of the work–3 in 5 and 1 in 3. The sticker is meant to serve as an uplifting message in both English and Ojibwa. The message states “strong we stand, women together”.
